Memory Lane: Sunday School songs

Lately I’ve had nostalgic memories of the Sunday School songs I sang as a child. For years as I was participating in Children’s Ministry regularly I sang lots of them regularly, but the last while I have not heard them. I have great memories of Richard K leading us kids in Kids Church or Wednesday nights – I hope my kids have similar experience, and hope their childhood songs aren’t just confined to “child like” versions of Hillsongs – not that these new fangled songs are bad, I just like the classics!

In no particular order, here’s a list of some favorites I remember – anyone else want to add your favorite?
1. Twelve Men Went To Spy On Canaan
2. Roll the gospel chariot along
3. Please don’t smoke (this song had huge ramifications for the gospel)
4. I’ve got the Victory
5. Deep & Wide
6. Away far over Jordan
7. I May Never March in the infantry
8. If you’re happy and you know it
9. My God Is So Big
10. Zaccheus was a wee little man

  1. John says:

    Ha Ha, folk songs.

    Those songs were the best.

    Thanks for the trip.

    John

  2. Pamela says:

The Colour Song was one of my favorites although the title is not so original!

  3. Tim says:

That’s a good one Pam – not a creative title and if I remember right the actions were hurtin’ too…

  4. Aim says:

We do alot of these songs in our church today although I don’t recognize songs 2,4 and 6.

  5. I’m looking for the name and lyrics to an old Sunday School song with these lyrics in it. Can anyone help?
How deep is the ocean, how wide is the sky?

  6. Paul says:

    WIDE, WIDE AS THE OCEAN
    High as the heavens above
Deep, deep as the deepest sea
    Is my Savour’s love;
    I, though so unworthy,
    Still I’m a child of his care;
    For his word teaches me
    That his love reaches me
    Ev-‘ry’where.

I have trouble at a Fundamentalist Chistian Sunday Schools when I hear about the infinite love of Jesus they describe in this song, and then hear later in the sermon for adults that this love somehow doesn’t reach down to Fundamentalist Muslims.

  7. Justin says:

    Paul,

I’m from a Christian church, and am the leader of our children’s sunday school song time of which we sing this song. However, I think your a bit mistaken. As Christians we believe that God’s love DOES reach everyone, everywhere. Be it muslims, christians, catholics, murders, good people, mean people, etc etc etc. It’s not a matter of God’s love not reaching them – Jesus died for ALL, and loves ALL. You might be thinking about salvation where yes, although we don’t know about anyone else, we can say from our perspective they will not go to Heaven as their way of believing you get there is wrong. It’ not about God not loving them, we believe that with all our hearts which is why we preach how important it is to share with them that God does love them, and the correct way God said you get to Heaven. Just wanted to clear that up for you…

Have a nice day! God bless..

  8. Mark-Anthony Rector says:

Hey you wouldn’t happen to know the lyrics to Stop and Go?
Stop and let me tell you what the Lord has done for me..

    The the other part

Go and tell the story of the one who died for me….

We used to have Sign when we sang stop, you held up the red sign, and sang the verse, when time came for the Go, nd tell, you flipped the sign around, and sang

Go and tell the story of the Christ of Calvary…

    • DONNA JOHNSON says:

STOP AND LET ME TELL YOU WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE FOR ME
STOP AND LET ME TELL YOU WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE FOR ME
HE FORGAVE MY SIN AND HE SAVE MY SOUL
HE CLEANSED MY HEART AND HE MADE ME WHOLE
STOP AND LET ME TELL YOU, WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE FOR ME

GO AND TELL THE STORY OF THE CHRIST OF CALVARY
GO AND TELL THE STORY OF THE CHRIST OF CALVARY
HE WILL FORGIVE THEIR SINS, HE WILL SAVE THEIR SOULS
HE WILL CLEANSE THEIR HEARTS, HE WILL MAKE THEM WHOLE
GO AND TELL THE STORY OF THE CHRIST OF CALVARY

        Thanks.

      • Lori says:

Thank you, I have been searching everywhere for the workd I learned ofer 40 years ago. Do you remember the signs we use to have in Good News Clubs?

      • Alan Arneson says:

My wife is leading the opening time at VBS next week in our church and is switching up some of the theme songs (that are not real good musically) with some old favorites that fit in.

You helped us here with the stop Sign Song. We could get the words right to Watch and Go. But what the words to “One Way” and “Yield”? I will check back. Thanks!

      • Dianne Venegoni says:

I tried to find your website, but did not find anything that pertained to you singing some memory verses. I would be interested in your memory verse cd and CEF songs, also. We have a Good News Club in Indiana and would like all the help we can get. Thanks

  13. Laura says:

And another verse WATCH (is the beginning of the second part)

  14. Kathy says:

I have been looking for a song I sang as a child which was over 50 years ago. The lyrics are:
    Love one another,
    Love one another,
    This is the happy way,
    Love one another.

    another verse is:

    Serve one another,
    Serve one another,
    This is the happy way,
    Serve one another.

Any ideas as to where I can find this song?

  15. Sara says:

Anyone know the lyrics to “Two Little Fishes and FIve Loaves of Bread? I’m teaching the story tomorrow and I know the kids would love to hear the song too. I can’t seem to find it anywhere on the internet

    • Melissa says:

Thank you, Sara. I thought I was going CRAZY! No one else seems to remember that song. I know I used to sing it, but cannot remember the lyrics! I am a Sunday School teacher myself now and would love to find the lyrics to teach my little ones.

      • Violet says:

Two little fishes and five loaves of bread. With this little bit of food the multitudes were fed. Who else but the son of God could do as people said? With two little fishes and five loaves of bread.

      • Doug Kuriger says:

        To add to Violet’s reply:
Ten thousand people on the shores of Galilee, listened as The Savior spoke and taught them patiently. Who else but the Son of God could do this, people said, with two little fishes and five loaves of bread?

  16. Terra Ayres says:

Anybody know the lyrics to the song about the spies,
something like “Twelve went down to spy on Canaan,
Ten were bad and two were good.
What did they see when they got to Canaan?”
    …and I forget the rest…
maybe… “Some saw giants 10 feet tall,
    some saw ……….
some saw the Lord who ruled it all
And some were bad and two were good.”

    • Jim P. says:

Twelve men went to spy on Canaan, Ten were bad and two were good.
What do you think they saw in Canaan? Ten were bad and two were good.
Some saw Giants big and strong, some saw grapes with clusters long.
Some saw God was in it all, Ten were bad and two were good.

  17. Tim says:

I posted the lyrics as I remember then Terra.

  18. Jess says:

    I like the Countdown song:
    Somewhere in outer space
    God has prepared a place
For those who trust him and obey.
    Jesus will come again
And, though we don’t know when,
The countdown’s getting lower every day.
    10 and 9, 8 and 7
    6 and 5 and 4.
Call upon the Savior while you may.
    3 and 2, coming through
    The clouds in bright array.
The countdown’s getting lower every day.

  19. Carolyn says:

There’s a song that I think is called “In God’s Green Pastures” doesanyone know it. The only line I remember is that at one point somone sings “Waters cool” and then there’s a response to it. I know the tune but not the lyrics.

  21. Natalie says:

Wonderful site! Thanks for the memories!!!

  22. Natalie says:

Actually, I was just thinking…there is a second verse to Two Little Fishes and Five Loaves of Bread. Here goes as I remember it:

Five thousand people on the shores of Galilee, listened while the Saviour spoke and waited patiently. Suppertime had come and gone and there was none to eat. So “call the people” Jesus said, and “let’s all have a seat.” And He took two little fishes and five loaves of bread. With this little bit of food the multitude was fed. Who else but the Son of God could do as people said, with two little fishes and five loaves of bread!

    • Joyce says:

      Thanks again – Rob.

  34. Rosemary says:

Two Little Fishes and Five Loaves of Bread…
with this little bit of food the multitude was fed.
“Who else but the Son of God could do this?” people said…
with two little fishes and five loaves of bread.

    • Rosemary says:

Two little fishes: add a clap after “and” in the last line. It had it’s own music from a licensed bible school program circa 1980’s.

  35. Jack Herbert says:

Looking for the MUSIC for “Let the Beauty of Jesus Be Seen in Me” (I remember most of the words). The song will be used (with an adapted lyric) as a tribute to a wonderful person who has virtually fufilled that challenge all her life. Its more solemn thoughts don’t lend to the usual up-beat children’s song, but I remember it being sung when the Sunday School lesson took on a more reflective direction.
“Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me
    All……passion and purity
    Oh, Thou, Spirit divine
    ……………
Till the beauty of Jesus be seen in me.”
    Thanks for any help.
    Jack

  36. Kim Fleshman says:

    How about this one…
I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart (where?)
    down in my heart (where?)
    down in my heart
I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart (where?)
down in my heart to stay

I’ve got the peace that passes understanding down in my heart (where?)
    down in my heart (where?)
    down in my heart
I’ve got the peace that passes understanding down in my heart (where?)
down in my heart to stay

And if the Devil doesn’t like it he can sit on a tack (ouch!)
    sit on a tack (ouch!)
    sit on a tack
and if the Devil doesn’t like it he can sit on a tack (ouch!)
sit on a tack and stay

When I was a kid we loved splitting the song up as two sides and the (where?) would say it as loud as they could. Also, we loved singing the peace that passes understanding verse as fast as we could and still say it clearly.

  37. Joanna says:

Does anyone know another old Sunday school song about the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish? It goes like this:

    Jesus fed five thousand people
All were seated on the ground
(can’t remember any more of the this first verse or any other verses)

    [Refrain]
    Five loaves of bread
    And two little fish

  38. Katherine Munro says:

Hi, can anyone help me? I’ve been searching unsuccessfully for a song about Zacchaeus. Not the one about a wee little man. But all I can remember of it are the lines ‘Come down, Zacchaeus, down from the tree. Come down Zacchaeus give the Lord his tea.’

  39. Carole says:

I’ve been singing this Sunday School song, amongst others, to a very ill friend of mine. She had never heard it before now and although she is incapable of remembering the words due to her terminal illness, she hums as I sing and she smiles. Music and songs oftimes reach into the heart when words are hard to articulate.

I am redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.
I am redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.
I am redeemed by the blood of the Lamb,
    Saved and satisfied I am,
All my sins are taken away, taken away.

I love His name, ’tis sweet to me.
I love His name, ’tis sweet to me.
I love His name, ’tis sweet to me,
    Hallelujah I am free,
All my sins are taken away, taken away.

I’m going to Heaven, won’t you come along.
I’m going to Heaven, won’t you come long.
I’m going to Heaven won’t you come along,
Come and join our happy throng,
All our sins are taken away, taken away.
