Ewaste

I was dealing with some e-waste at work today, got me thinking about how big of a problem it is.  In school someone had done a presentation about it and talked about the city of Guiyu – where a whole lot of our old computers and tech stuff goes to die – and kill.  I found this picture that is heart wrenching – didn’t want to steal it from the lady who took it (Natalie Behring) so you’ll have to go to her flickr site (go to the “ewaste” set) – looks like she’s got lots of good stuff to look at anyway, including some really nice shots from the Olympics.  There is much to consider the next time you throw your electronics in the trash…

Stop the Phonebooks

I hadn’t really thought of it, but phone books really are quite a waste.  I use mine once in a while, but could really get buy with an online alternative – and it is just so much paper when you consider it, and it comes whether people ask for it or not.  I got started thinking on this when I saw a link to this site in the states.  Here’s some Canadian options I found after a quick look:

• Red Dot Campaign (Refusing Junk Mail from Canada Post) – also a group on facebook
• Canadian Marketing Assocation Do Not Contact Service
• Canada Post’s Plan to reduce waste mail
• “The Yellow Pages Must Be Stopped” group on Facebook.  An attempt to raise awareness about the need to stop the automatic delivery of phone books.
