Shane&Shane Lyrics: Before the throne
The lyrics to this song caught my ear last night. They said it was an old hymn with some added. From their latest album: Pages.
Before The Throne
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great high Priest who’s name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for meMy name is graven on His hand
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence departWhen satan tempts me to despair
and tells me of the guilt within
upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sinBecause a sinless Savior died
my sinful soul is counted free
For God the just is satisfied
to look on Him and pardon meHallelujah
Praise the One Risen Son of God.Behold Him there, the risen Lamb
My perfect spotless righteousness
The great unchangeable I AM
The King of Glory and of graceOne in Himself, I cannot die
My soul is purchased by His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high
With Christ my Savior and my God

I have this hymn in one of my hymn books and it’s by a lady named Charitie Bancroft. It says it was written in 1863. It looks like the only part they added is the little “Hallelujah, Praise the One Risen Son of God” part. What’s interesting is that the tune in this hymn book is the same tune that I grew up singing Sweet Hour of Prayer to. Not that anybody cares about this stuff but me, but there you have it anyway!! Did they do a new tune for it?
Stewart
That’s funny Stew – after I posted this I looked for the original song and one of the websites had a cheesy midi version of it play when the page opened and I noticed it was a different melody – I was annoyed by the music (had my speakers turned up at the time so it almost woke the kids up) so I turned it off right away and didn’t connect that it was “sweet hour of prayer”. They did indeed add that couple lines to the lyrics and it is a different tune – although it is hymn like so maybe he got it from somewhere else.
I liked this song the best from the set they did in Regina (probably the same set they do everywhere). I was also curious when they said it was an old hymn.
“Sweet Hour of Prayer”? Really, Stew? I’m trying to fit that tune with the words and they don’t seem to go together. The tune I’ve heard for this one is on some old British Worship Together album from the 90s. Maybe they just made the tune up, but I liked it. We used to sing it a capella in Victoria with a Jim Mann arrangement. Whatever the tune, a great hymn.
Shane & Shane… I thoroughly enjoyed them down here as well. Like you, I went in with high expectations and was not disappointed. I chatted with Shane Everett at the intermission and told him to get up before another 10 years pass this time. I think he thought I was joking… definitely wasn’t.
And Stew… I’m glad you’re the hymn geek! There must be days on Jeopardy when you clean up.
Bob Kauflin wrote about this on his website–the text is by bancroft. The melody is by vikki cook. Shane & Shane failed to give her credit on their album originally, but apparently reprints of the album will be corrected. Kauflin himself called Shane & Shane on Cook’s behalf to get the matter straightened out! Got to give credit where credit is due!
